The Hills at Vallco and later called The Rise, is a mixed-use project in the heart of Silicon Valley comprised of 2402 residential units, half of which are affordable. In addition, there is 400,000 SF of retail and 2 million SF of office space over a 50 acre site. The design incorporates a 30 acre green roof public space and additional sustainability features for both residents and the public.
The design intention was to provide the single family homes at the West with a green park-like surface and move the large bulk of the development toward the I-280 highway and the commercial office buildings to the East. By modulating the rise and fall of the green roof, a simulated landscape was able to borrow the Diablo and Santa Cruz Mountains as landscape to create a truly unique pastoral environment, placing a hillside park where one did not previously exist.
